<title>Mathematical ability, science misconceptions and students’ performance</title>

This survey-correlational research aimed to ascertain the mathematical ability, science misconceptions and performance of seventy-one (71) first year college students of Capiz State University, Dayao Satellite College, Dayao, Roxas City, Capiz during the first semester of academic year 2016–2017. Mathematical ability and Science Performance researcher made test questionnaires and the revised American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) Assessment Questionnaire 2013 instrument were used to determine the science performance of the respondents based on their mathematical ability and level of science misconceptions. The statistical analyses used were mean, standard deviation, t-test for independent samples, Analysis of Variance (ANOVA), and Pearson r. In general, the respondents were mathematically “fairly able” (M=29.15, SD=4.087). In particular, out of 71 respondents, 73% were “fairly able”, 24% were “able” and only 3% were “highly able”. Respondents level of science misconceptions were “moderately high/low” (M=28.83, SD=3.179). Of the 71 students, 35% were having “low” level of misconceptions and 65% are with “moderately high or low” level of science misconceptions. As a whole, respondents had “satisfactory” performance in science (M=26.68, SD=3.179). Particularly, 89% of 71 students had “satisfactory” performance, 7% with “very satisfactory” performance and only 4% have “poor” performance in science. There was a significant difference in the science performance of first year college students when grouped according to their mathematical ability (F(2,68) = 111.463, p&lt;0.05). Science performance of students differed significantly among the mathematically “highly able”, “able” and the mathematically “fairly able” students. Also, results showed that there was a significant difference in science performance of students when grouped by their level of science misconceptions. Furthermore, data revealed that students performance in science was significantly related with their mathematical ability (r=0.334, p&lt;0.01) and level of science misconceptions (r=1.000, p&lt;0.01). As found out that there were significant relationships among science performance, mathematical ability and level of science misconceptions, it appears that mathematical ability and level of science misconceptions are factors affecting their science performance.

In the Philippines, Embutido is a typical party food which is served warm at room temperature or even cold. This experimental developmental research generally aimed to prepare a Bamboo Shoot-Enhanced Embutido and further find out its acceptability. Specifically, it sought to: (1) describe the sensory qualities of Bamboo Shoot - Enhanced Embutido in terms of aroma, color, taste, and texture; (2) determine the acceptability of Bamboo Shoot - Enhanced Embutido; (3) find out if there are significant differences in the sensory qualities of Bamboo Shoot - Enhanced Embutido in terms of aroma, color, taste and texture; and (4) find out if there is a significant difference in the acceptability of Bamboo Shoot – Enhanced Embutido. Analysis of Variance in Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with Tukey Post Hoc Test was used to analyze data and pinpoint where the significant difference occurred. Using the three bamboo varieties, it was found out that the bamboo Shoot-Embutido was rated “very much pleasant” in terms of aroma, “very much authentic” in terms of color, “very much delicious” in terms of taste, and “very much soft but firm” in terms of texture. No significant differences existed in the general acceptability of Bamboo Shoot-Enhanced Embutido among three treatments when the sensory qualities were taken into consideration.

This survey-correlational study sought to ascertain the relation of personality traits to the Mathematics performance of students. This study utilized 261 students of Capiz State University Sigma Satellite College who were selected randomly from a population of 751 for the school year 2016-2017. To determine the personality traits of the respondents, the researchers utilized the Big Five Personality Test. The data collected from the study undergone the analyses of frequency and percentage, mean, standard deviation, t-test for independent samples, and Pearson’s r. A 0.05 level of significance was set for all inferential tests. Findings showed that the most dominant personality trait of students of CAPSU Sigma is Conscientiousness followed by Agreeableness, Neuroticism, and Openness to Experience and Extroversion. The performance of CAPSU Sigma students in Mathematics was found to be “low”. It was also found out that male and female students significantly differed in their level of extroversion, conscientiousness, and openness to experience. In addition, THM and Technology students differed in terms of their level of extroversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness, and openness to experience. There was a significant difference in the performance of students in Mathematics when they were grouped in terms of sex. A significant relationship was found between performance in Mathematics and extroversion and as well as a significant relationship between performance in Mathematics and conscientiousness

Lifelong learners, though believed to be large in number, are scattered across the country. These were graduates from high school prior to 2016, under the basic education curriculum before K12, and who failed to enroll or complete their undergraduate degrees. This makes it difficult for institutions to forecast demand and identify the financial viability of opening of classes during the K12 transition years. Hence, the study was conducted to find out thepossible number of this group within the municipality, their profile, needs and to gauge the capacity of the higher education system to accommodate this special cohort. Results revealed that the potential lifelong learners are young females, single and unemployed college undergraduate who stopped due to lack of financial resources. They are aware that school year 2017-2018 is their last chance to enroll or return to college. Scholarships/ financial assistance were cited as top incentives that could encourage them to return and enroll in college. Majority signified definite willingness in returning to school. They are decided to enroll in CapSU - Pilar Satellite College and take Agriculture in the first semester of school year 2017-2018.
