Attitude towards reading and the comprehension level of intermediate pupils: basis for reading skills enhancement
Abstract
This study is on the attitude towards reading and the comprehension level of intermediate pupils of Maayon Central School This utilized the descriptive – correlational research design. This design is used to find the relationship between the attitude towards reading and the comprehension skills of intermediate pupils utilizing a researcher-made questionnaire. Descriptive statistics were employed in this study. The intermediate pupils have favorable attitudes towards reading and they enjoy reading funny stories, enjoy going to the library, and when reading by themselves. They learned much from what they have read and they read merely for enjoyment. Their comprehension level is instructional which implies that they read when they are guided by the teachers. The age, grade level and parents’ educational attainment of the respondents have significant relationships with their attitude towards reading while their sex and parents’ occupation has no bearing with their attitudes towards reading. The attitude towards reading of the intermediate pupils and their comprehension level are significantly related. A reading scheme with designed reading instructional material was developed by the researchers to enhance the reading skills of the intermediate pupils.
