Attitudes towards literature and reading and performance in English of 11th graders in the district of Jamindan
Abstract
This study was conducted at Jagnaya National High School, Jamindan National High School, Macario Bermejo National High School, and Lucero National High School during the second semester of school year 2018-2019 to find out the attitudes towards literature and reading and performance in English of 11th graders in the District of Jamindan. The study involved a sample of 234 Grade 11 students. A questionnaire composed of three parts was used in gathering data for the study. Both descriptive and inferential statistics, such as frequency counts, percentages, means, standard deviation, T-test, ANOVA, and Pearson r, were used for statistical analysis. Results of the study revealed that the majority of the respondents were females; more of the respondents location of school was in town; more of them had fathers who were elementary level; most of them had mothers who were high school graduates; and the majority earned a monthly family income of Php10, 000 and below. Results also revealed that respondents had high levels of attitudes towards literature and reading and outstanding performance in English. Moreover, results revealed that sex and fathers’ educational attainment significantly affected the respondents’ attitudes towards literature. Further, personal related variables did not influence their attitude towards reading. Also, respondents’ sex and location of school had an influence on their performance in English. Lastly, results revealed that attitudes towards literature and reading and attitude towards literature and performance in English were found to be highly significantly related, while attitude towards reading and performance in English were found to be significantly related.
